“Unscientific America” co-author Chris Mooney, fresh back from an overseas honeymoon and resuming his book tour before beginning a one-year stint as a Knight Fellow at MIT, made his case for a more scientifically literate citizenry in a four-minute, thirty-second morning broadcast on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program September 21.

In a somewhat softball-laden Q&A conducted by program co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist, Mooney and his interviewers echoed statistics from the book he coauthored earlier this year with Sheril Kirshenbaum. He explained his view on why he thinks a scientifically literate citizenry – and not just a far smaller number of scientifically sound individuals or leaders – is critical to American society on issues such as climate change and stem cell research. The brief broadcast offers an easy and accessible point of entry into the book for those still new to the overall subject, addressed at length in their book and featured as its subtitle of “How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens Our Future.”
