Some doctors choose to spend their retirement on the golf course. But not Brad Miller.

Miller: “As I approached retirement, I became very interested in how I was going to serve my community in a different way.”

Miller lives in Nevada City, California, in the Sierra Nevada Foothills.

Miller: “We are the recipient of a good deal of air pollution that floats up from the Sacramento Valley, and so as a physician, I saw a lot of impact among my patients who had lung disease.”

So now, Miller has decided to devote his golden years to fighting one of the causes of illness and suffering:

Burning fossil fuels is a major source of harmful air pollution. It also causes climate change, which can harm human health by making wildfires, extreme weather, and intense heat more common.

So Miller is helping to start a local chapter of a climate lobbying group called Citizen’s Climate Lobby, which advocates for a price on carbon pollution.

Miller: “In terms of an investment in the future and the well-being of my children and grandchildren, this seemed like a very worthwhile way to spend my energy.”
